Medaille College
Humboldt Parkway Promenade
Buffalo, NY

Medaille College owns several houses along Humboldt Parkway that are being converted by the college into administrative offices. While these houses face Humboldt Parkway, the back sides of the houses face the campus and provide the northern border of the campus. In order for these houses to be converted over to public use by the College, each house needed to become handicap accessible. Rather than creating handicap ramps at each unit, a switch-back elevated walkway was designed as a campus feature, providing access to each house along this promenade from the campus side of the houses. The slopes of the elevated walkway were maintained to be the maximum allowed without the addition of handrails and landings, keeping an open and inviting feel for the campus. The design of the promenade and elevated crosswalk from the quad to access the promenade, helped to unify the houses with the rest of the campus. Each house has an exterior patio space with benches and lighting along the campus entrance.
