Starting this spring JKLA ventured into the world of “Social Networking” by developing a Joy Kuebler Landscape Architect, PC Facebook “Fan” site. We are able to use this site to communicate with our fans in an instant messaging format. We are very active on this site posting office news, events, and project photos. The site also allows us to provide “commentary” on topics relating to the world of landscape architecture in general as well as in particular to the Western New York Region. We have fans from as far away as Germany and Bermuda as well as many local professionals and students. Become a “Fan” today to keep up with us minute-by-minute.
Lynn License
JKLA was looking to start off 2009 with a bang, and Lynn helped us out by passing her licensing exams. She is now officially a licensed Landscape Architect! Congratulations Lynn!!
Other News
JKLA’s green roof was featured in our professional publication Landscape Architecture Magazine May 2009 issue. It was incredible to open this periodical and see our work showcased!

Summer 2009 Interns
Mark Hegyi joins us for the summer from SUNY ESF in Syracuse. Mark is a local boy from Derby, NY who will be entering his 5th year of the landscape architecture program at ESF. He will be in Barcelona for the fall semester before graduating in May. Mark has been a tremendous asset to the company this summer and we look forward to him visiting us when he returns from Barcelona! It was great to have him on board!
Clayton Schmidt
Continuing in the spirit of promoting landscape architecture to young people, we'd like to welcome our high school intern Clayton Schmidt. He will be a senior at North Tonawanda High School in the fall and is presently taking part in the Architecture and Engineering Academy within the school year. As part of the program they are asked to complete 55 hours over the summer as an intern with a local company. Clayton has expressed an interest in landscape architecture and we are happy to have him for the next few weeks!
Spring 2009 Interns
After making a presentation to Buffalo State College’s Interior Design student association, JKLA was approached by two young women interested in learning more about landscape architecture. Kile Krawczak and Amy Anderson joined us and were a huge asset on the Show House Project this spring. As part of our philosophy we encourage young people interested in landscape architecture to contact us, shadow us or intern with us. This time it was wonderful working with the allied profession of Interior Design as well as these terrific students!
Permeable Paver Installation Day, June 4, 2008
In continuing with our sustainable efforts at the office, JKLA hosted another educational event. In June, Gleason’s Nursery installed Unilock permeable pavers for the office patio and driveway. Permeable interlocking concrete pavers address the issues of surface runoff and storm water management as an ecological solution. As designers, site management and storm water control are always important in the design process. These permeable pavers provide an alternative and sustainable solution to the typical impermeable pavement usage.
Only a small section of the patio was completed for the day of the event, so that the process of installing could easily be demonstrated, and so that all layers were visible. Continuing Education credits were offered to fellow architects, landscape architects, and engineers.
Special thanks to Unilock for providing the pavers, Gleason’s Nursery for the installation, and Lightspec for the refreshments.
ASLA National Conference 2008
JKLA has been fortunate to have attended the past few National ASLA Conferences, and 2008 brought it close to home. We had a large contingency of past and present employees attend the meeting in Philadelphia, including Joy, Lynn, Alison, Nicole and Margaret.
Lynn and Alison attended the joint Upstate and Downstate chapters conference in October, entitled “Confluence: Greening Cities across New York State,” in Binghamton, NY where Lynn accepted the Merit Award for School 90 on behalf of the company.
Meet our Intern
Luke Macleod is a senior in Erie Community College’s Architecture Program, and is completing an internship with us to explore Landscape Architecture as a next step in his academic and professional life. We recently visited Cornell to show him the ropes, meet up with admissions and to interview with the Landscape Architecture Department. It has been a pleasure having Luke on board with us and we wish him luck in the world of LA!
Transportation Conclave
In March of 2007 Joy participated in a Round Table workshop with a focus on all aspects of transportation in the community hosted by Landscape Forms, Inc in their hometown of Kalamazoo, MI. Each year Landscape Forms hosts a forum on one aspect of our built environment and presents a brief or white paper on the topic. The brief from our Transportation Conclave can be found
here.
ASLA National Conference 2007
Joy, Lynn, and Alison attended the American Society of Landscape Architects national conference in San Francisco in October. The theme was “Designing with Nature: the Art of Balance” and focused on green trends in the industry. http://www.asla.org/meetings/am2007/
A primary topic throughout the conference was the Landscape Architecture sustainability point system similar to LEED. Check out further information on the Sustainable SITES initiative…
